Why grow strawberries

Home-grown strawberries ripen fully on the plant, developing sugars that commercially harvested fruit — picked underripe for shipping — never achieves. A single planting can produce for three to four years with minimal replanting effort.

A little history. A hybrid first documented in 18th-century France, derived from crosses between a Chilean and a North American wild species. The fleshy 'fruit' is botanically an enlarged receptacle (the stem tip that swells to hold the true fruits, which are the small seeds on the surface).
