Why grow tomatoes

Home-grown tomatoes ripen fully on the vine, developing sugars and acids that commercially harvested fruit — picked green and gas-ripened — cannot match. The range of sizes, colors, and flavors available to the home gardener far exceeds what any market offers.

A little history. Native to western South America, where wild relatives still grow in Andean foothills. Domesticated in Mesoamerica before European contact; introduced to Europe in the 16th century per standard horticultural histories.

Deep soak every 2–3 days in warm weather; daily in containers above 85 °F (29 °C). Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry, or leaves show slight midday wilt that does not recover by evening. Aim for about 1–2 inches per week; more in peak summer heat.

Side-dress (scatter fertilizer along the root zone and water in) every 3–4 weeks once first flowers open. What to use: low-nitrogen, phosphorus- and potassium-forward fertilizer at flowering; balanced feed during early vegetative growth.

Prune and maintain

Pinch out suckers (the shoots that emerge in the crotch between stem and branch) on indeterminate varieties to maintain 1–2 main stems and improve airflow. Determinate varieties need minimal pruning — removing only the lowest leaves touching soil is sufficient.

Harvest and store

It's ready when fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure, color is fully developed and even across the surface, and the fruit separates from the vine with minimal pull. Grip the fruit and twist gently upward, or cut the stem just above the calyx (the green star-shaped cap) with clean scissors. Harvest daily during peak season to keep the plant producing.

Store at room temperature away from direct sun — never refrigerate ripe tomatoes, as cold breaks down texture and flavor. Use within 5–7 days. Green tomatoes ripen at 65–70 °F (18–21 °C) indoors.

Basil

Basil's strong-smelling leaves can help hide tomatoes from pests that hunt by scent, and trials report fewer thrips where the two are interplanted. Results vary with pest pressure, so treat it as a bonus rather than a substitute for scouting.

Carrot

Carrots send a slim taproot straight down while tomato roots spread wide through the upper soil, so the two often share a bed without fighting for water. Sow carrots at least 12 inches out so digging them does not tear tomato feeder roots.

Parsley

Parsley left to flower in its second year opens flat clusters of tiny blooms that feed hoverflies and small parasitic wasps, and those insects often reduce aphid numbers on nearby tomatoes. It stays low enough not to shade the crop.

French Marigold

French marigold has been shown to reduce root-knot nematodes, but only when grown as a thick block through the season or turned into the soil at the end of it. A few plants at the bed edge will not do it, and marigolds do not deter beetles.

Borage

Borage's blue flowers draw bumblebees, whose vibrating visits shake pollen loose inside tomato blossoms and can improve fruit set in still air. Give it a corner of the bed, since it grows broad and reseeds freely.

Keep it away from

Fennel

Fennel roots release substances that stunt most garden vegetables, tomatoes included, so keep it out of the bed entirely. Grown well apart in its own corner it still earns space, because its flower heads feed hoverflies and tiny parasitic wasps.

Sweet Corn

The tomato fruitworm and the corn earworm are the same caterpillar, so pairing the crops keeps a steady supply of hosts through the season. Tall corn also shades tomatoes and competes hard for nitrogen and water.

Dill

Young dill is harmless, but mature plants compete for water and light close to tomato stems and can slow them. Keep dill a few feet off, where its flowers still pull in aphid predators.

Red Russian Kale

Gardeners have long separated these two, and the plausible part of the tradition is competition: both are heavy feeders, and a caged tomato casts deep shade over a kale plant that wants full sun for dense leaf growth.

Cauliflower

Tomatoes are tall, heavy feeders that shade a cauliflower rosette just as the curd needs light and steady food, and they peak in the heat that pushes cauliflower to rice. Give each its own season and space.

Cabbage

This pairing is said to go badly, but there is no demonstrated mechanism. What is real is that both are heavy feeders on the same soil, and a tall tomato shades a cabbage that needs full sun to firm up its head.

Red Cabbage

Both are heavy feeders drawing hard on the same water and nitrogen, and a caged tomato often shades a heading cabbage by midsummer. Give each its own bed rather than crowding them into one.

Brussels Sprouts

Shagbark Hickory

The tomato family is the most reliably affected group beneath walnut-family trees: plants wilt, yellow, and collapse even with good water and food. Grow tomatoes in beds well clear of the canopy and root zone, or in containers on paving.

Sea Kale

Tomatoes are replanted, staked and cleared every year, and that annual digging and trampling disturbs a crown that must sit undisturbed for a decade. Their summer bulk also shades and crowds sea kale leaves rebuilding reserves.

Artichoke

A mature artichoke spreads 4 to 6 feet of heavy silver foliage and shades out whatever sits beside it, while a staked tomato pulls hard on the same water and nitrogen. Both crops finish smaller; give them separate beds.

Strawberry

Tomatoes and strawberries both host verticillium wilt, a soil fungus that browns the crown and collapses older leaves. Keep them apart, and do not set strawberries where tomatoes grew within the past three years.

Jerusalem Artichoke

Tomatoes and sunchokes both carry verticillium wilt, so planting them side by side raises the fungus level in that soil. The 6-10 ft stems also shade a sun-hungry tomato badly by midsummer.

Sweet Potato

Both crops are good hosts for root-knot nematodes, so pairing them in the same bed can build populations that scar sweet potato tubers and stunt tomato roots. Keep them in separate beds where nematodes are known.

Heartnut

Tomatoes and their relatives reliably wilt, yellow, and die within the root zone of walnut family trees. Keep them at least 50 feet from the trunk, and never mulch a tomato bed with heartnut husks or leaves.

Butternut

Butternut roots release a growth-inhibiting substance, and tomatoes and their relatives reliably wilt, yellow, and die back within reach of the roots. Keep the vegetable bed well beyond the canopy edge, and keep husks and leaves out of that compost.

Black Walnut

Tomatoes and their relatives reliably collapse near a black walnut, wilting and yellowing even with good soil and water. The active root zone reaches well past the drip line, so keep the vegetable bed at least 60 feet from the trunk.

English Walnut

The tomato family reliably struggles beneath a walnut: plants wilt, yellow, and collapse even with steady water and feeding. Grow tomatoes well outside the root spread, or in containers filled with clean soil away from the canopy.

Goji Berry

Goji and tomato are both in the nightshade family and host the same soilborne wilts and leaf diseases. Since the goji bed is permanent, keeping tomatoes out of it and out of the beds beside it stops disease from cycling year after year.

Pistachio

Tomatoes host the soil fungus that causes verticillium wilt, and pistachio is highly susceptible to it. Once the fungus is in the wood there is no cure, so do not plant a tree where tomatoes have grown in recent years.

Raspberry

Tomatoes carry the same soil-borne wilt that collapses raspberry canes in midsummer, and once the fungus is in the bed it stays. Choose ground with no tomato history for at least three years before planting.

Yacon

Yacon reaches 6-9 feet with broad leaves and will shade and out-drink a tomato planted beside it. The two also share root-knot nematodes, so keeping them in separate beds spares the tomatoes and slows nematode build-up.

Mashua

Tomatoes carry the same late blight that strips mashua foliage, and infected tomato vines left standing in late summer become a spore source right when mashua is sizing its tubers. Separate the two beds.

Kohlrabi

Gardeners have long separated kohlrabi and tomatoes, and no mechanism has been demonstrated. What is observable is competition: a caged tomato casts heavy shade and takes the water kohlrabi needs for steady, tender bulb growth.

Peach

Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and eggplant host the soil fungus that causes verticillium wilt, and peach is susceptible to it. Do not plant a young tree into ground that grew these crops in the past three years, and keep the vegetable patch outside the tree's root zone.
