Why grow Swiss Chard

Swiss chard bridges the gap between cool-season spinach and heat-tolerant summer greens, staying productive when most leafy crops bolt (shift from leaf growth to flowering). A single planting can yield continuously for five or more months with minimal inputs.

A little history. Swiss chard and beetroot are the same species; chard has been selected for enlarged, tender leaves and petioles rather than a swollen root. It originated in the Mediterranean basin and is documented in cultivation since at least the 4th century BCE.

The season, step by step

From planting to harvest

Sow outside

2–4 weeks before last frost

Sow seeds ½ inch (13 mm) deep, and aim for 9 inches (25 cm) between plants once thinned. Keep the top inch consistently moist until sprouts show; each corky seed cluster may produce 2–3 seedlings — thin to the strongest one. Seedlings emerge in 5–10 days.

Water and feed

All season

Deep soak twice a week in warm weather; once a week in cool weather. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Aim for about 1 inch per week including rain.

Side-dress (scatter fertilizer along the row and water in) every 3–4 weeks through the growing season. What to use: balanced 5–5-5 organic granular or a nitrogen-forward compost tea to support leafy growth.

Prune and maintain

Remove any flower stalks immediately if they appear — this redirects energy back to leaf production. Regularly harvesting outer leaves also suppresses bolting.

Harvest and store

50–60 days from sowing

It's ready when outer leaves are 8–12 inches long and the stem is firm and glossy. Do not wait for the whole plant to fill out — harvest outer leaves continuously once they reach that size. Grip an outer leaf stem close to the base and snap or cut it cleanly away from the crown. Leave the inner 3–4 leaves intact so the plant keeps growing. Harvest in the morning for the crispest stems.

Wrap unwashed stems loosely in a damp cloth or paper towel, place in a plastic bag, and refrigerate. Use within 3–5 days; leaves wilt quickly once cut.

Bush Bean

Bush beans bank nitrogen in root nodules, and most of it is released only after the roots break down — so cut the beans off at soil line at season's end and the bed will be richer for next year's chard, not this one's.

Garlic

Garlic's strong smell can help hide chard leaves from aphids that locate hosts by scent. Under heavy aphid pressure it will not carry the bed on its own, so keep checking leaf undersides.

Radish

Flea beetles often prefer radish leaves to chard seedlings, drawing the worst of the shot-hole damage onto a fast crop. Pull and bin the radishes as they size up rather than leaving a beetle nursery in the bed.

Lettuce

Lettuce feeds in the top few inches while chard sends a taproot deeper for moisture, so the two share a bed without fighting over water. The lettuce also covers open soil until the chard canopy closes.

Nasturtium

Aphids often colonize nasturtium stems in preference to chard. Treat it as a sacrificial planting at the bed edge and cut off heavily infested shoots, or the colony simply spreads.

Keep it away from

Beet

Chard and beet are the same species and host the same troubles — leaf spot, downy mildew, and leaf miners move freely between them. Growing them side by side stacks the risk and undoes any rotation you keep elsewhere.

Spinach

Spinach shares the beet family and the same leaf miner and downy mildew problems, so a hard-hit spinach patch often seeds trouble straight into neighbouring chard. Keep them in separate beds where you can.

Quinoa

Chard is the same species as beet and carries the same leaf miners and leaf spot fungi that trouble quinoa. Planting them apart breaks the cycle rather than handing the pests two hosts in one bed.

Clusters of small soft-bodied insects, often pale green or black, on the undersides of leaves; sticky residue and distorted new growth.

Knock off with a firm jet of water; repeat daily for 3-4 days. Introduce or encourage ladybirds and lacewings.

Flea beetles

Numerous small round holes scattered across leaves, most damaging on seedlings; tiny dark beetles jump when disturbed.
Fix
Cover seedlings with row cover at planting; delay sowing until soil is warm so plants establish quickly and outgrow damage.

Slugs and snails

Ragged holes in leaves, especially near the base; silvery slime trails on leaves or soil surface.
Fix
Set out iron phosphate bait around the base of plants at dusk; remove debris and boards where slugs shelter during the day.

Small circular spots with tan or grey centers and reddish-purple borders scattered across older leaves; spots may merge in wet weather.
