Exceptionally cold-hardy and drought-tolerant once established, it thrives in poor soils where most fruiting shrubs fail. The berries are among the most nutritionally dense small fruits documented in temperate horticulture.
A little history. Native to coastal and montane regions of Europe and Asia, this species fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root-associated actinobacteria, improving surrounding soil over time. Dioecious (separate male and female plants), so both sexes are required for fruit set.

Water deeply once a week for the first growing season; reduce to every 2 weeks once established. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry during the establishment year. Aim for about 1 inch per week during establishment; drought-tolerant after year 2.
Apply compost at planting; top-dress lightly each spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers — the plant fixes its own. What to use: mature compost or low-nitrogen organic mulch; excess nitrogen promotes leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
Prune in late winter while fully dormant. Remove crossing or dead branches and open the canopy for light penetration. Wear thick gloves — spines are sharp. Hard renovation pruning reduces fruiting for 1–2 seasons.
It's ready when berries turn deep orange-yellow and feel slightly soft when gently squeezed, typically late summer to early fall. Taste a berry — ripe fruit is tart but fully flavored with no harsh astringency. Wear gloves and long sleeves. Cut entire fruiting side-shoots (lateral branches) with pruners and freeze briefly — frozen berries strip cleanly from stems by hand or with a fork. Avoid pulling individual berries, which crushes them.
Refrigerate unwashed berries up to 2 weeks. Freeze on trays then bag for up to 12 months. High oil content means berries can turn rancid if stored warm.
No special protection needed for established plants in cold climates. In the first winter, mulch the root zone with 3–4 inches of straw to buffer soil temperature swings around newly planted roots.
Comfrey
Comfrey's deep taproot draws water and minerals from below the shrub's spreading surface roots, so the two rarely compete, and its broad leaves shade the root zone. Cut leaves can be dropped as mulch around the base.
White Clover
Clover banks nitrogen in the soil that is mostly released the following seasons as its roots break down, and it works as a low living cover that holds moisture and crowds out weeds under a thorny shrub you would rather not weed by hand.
Yarrow
Yarrow's flat flower heads draw in hoverflies, lacewings, and tiny parasitic wasps, the same predators that clean aphids off tender shoot tips. It also handles the same lean, dry ground the shrub prefers.
Chives
A strong onion scent at the base can help confuse aphids that locate new growth by smell, and under low pest pressure a ring of chives is one of the few edibles that tolerates the dry, gravelly conditions around the shrub.
Black Walnut
Shrubs set beneath black walnut often decline over a few seasons, and its dense shade and greedy surface roots work against a plant that demands full sun and sharp drainage. Site sea buckthorn well outside the walnut's canopy spread.
A perennial — it holds its spot for years, so it sits outside the annual rotation.
A permanent shrub, so there is no rotation and no family gap to keep — nothing follows it in that spot for decades. Its roots fix their own nitrogen and slowly enrich the ground nearby, so put hungry crops such as the cabbage or squash families in adjacent beds.
