Why grow rye

Rye establishes faster and tolerates colder soils than any other cereal grain, making it uniquely suited to late-season sowing. Its dense root mass breaks up compaction and its residue suppresses early weed germination when turned in.

A little history. Rye is the most cold-tolerant domesticated cereal, capable of germinating in soils near 34F. Domesticated from wild relatives in southwest Asia, it is documented in archaeological sites dating to the Bronze Age.

Sow seeds 1 inch (25 mm) deep, and aim for 1 inches (3 cm) between plants once thinned. Rake seed into the top half-inch of soil and firm with the back of a hoe; keep moist until sprouts show, then rainfall usually suffices. Seedlings emerge in 4–10 days.

Water at sowing; established plants rarely need supplemental irrigation except during dry spells in spring. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry and leaves show slight rolling or graying. Aim for about 1 inch per week during active spring growth.

Side-dress (scatter fertilizer along the row and water in) once in early spring as growth resumes. What to use: balanced compost or a low-rate nitrogen source such as blood meal; avoid heavy nitrogen, which promotes lodging (stalks falling over).

Harvest and store

It's ready when grain is ready when seed heads turn golden-tan and individual kernels are hard and resist thumbnail pressure; stems are fully straw-colored. Cut stalks at the base with shears or a sickle when 90% of the head is golden. Bundle into sheaves, tie loosely, and hang upside down in a dry, ventilated space for 1–2 weeks before threshing.

Thresh dried grain, winnow away chaff, and store in sealed containers in a cool, dry location; properly dried grain keeps 1–2 years.

Rye stalks give hairy vetch something to climb, holding the vine off wet soil and making the mix easier to mow or turn under. The vetch also banks nitrogen that is mostly released for next season as its roots break down.

Crimson Clover

Crimson clover fixes nitrogen in its roots while rye scavenges leftover nitrogen from the soil, and the stored nitrogen is mostly released for the following season once the clover roots break down after turn-in.

Field Pea

Field pea tendrils grab rye stems and climb, which keeps the stand upright and airy instead of a sodden mat. Sow them together at reduced rates so the rye does not out-muscle the peas for light.

Keep it away from

Wheat

Wheat and rye host the same leaf rust, powdery mildew, and Hessian fly, so side-by-side plantings let problems build and carry over. Keep them in separate beds and separate rotation slots.

Barley

Barley shares rye's rust and mildew problems and draws on the same soil nitrogen at the same depth, so an adjacent planting stacks disease risk and thins both stands.

Oats

Rye carries the same grass-family rusts and smuts as oats, and its vigorous stand also out-muscles oat seedlings for light and moisture. Grow it in its own bed on a separate rotation slot.

Einkorn

Rye residue releases compounds that reliably suppress the germination of small seeds, einkorn among them, so a rye stand or freshly turned rye stubble thins the grain that follows. Rye also shares rust and mildew with einkorn.
